The walk from the arena

Leave the Garden on Seventh Avenue, walk east on 31st or 33rd Street, and continue past Broadway toward Fifth Avenue. AYZA is at 11 West 31st Street, between Fifth and Broadway. It is roughly 0.4 mile and about eight minutes, though the first two minutes after a sold out show are slower than the rest.

Walking east has a second advantage beyond distance. You move away from the Penn Station bottleneck rather than into it, so the streets thin out quickly. By the time you reach Broadway the crowd has mostly dispersed toward the subway entrances behind you.

What to order for dessert

The Sweet Treats menu splits into three parts: fondue, plated desserts and boxes of chocolates. Here is how they compare when you are deciding at the door.

The fondue, if there are two of you

You pick the chocolate first: Callebaut milk from Belgium, Callebaut white, or the 70 percent dark from República del Cacao in Ecuador for $4 more. The First Date Fondue at $31 arrives with strawberries, banana, candied orange, French brie, Castelvetrano olives, Espelette pepper and Maldon salt. The olives and the salt sound odd on paper and are the reason the plate works; they stop it from turning into pure sugar. The Rosé Fondue is $29 and leans sweeter, with Sicilian pistachios and organic rose buds.

A plate of your own

If sharing a pot is not the mood, the chocolate cake comes with melted dark chocolate over it, the coconut flan is gluten free and comes with caramel, and the affogato is vanilla gelato under fresh espresso, with Kahlúa or Frangelico available for $5 more. The olive oil gelato with hot honey and Maldon salt is the one to order if you want something you have not had before.

Boxes of chocolate

Three selections, all sized to share around a table. Five Jacques Torres chocolates for $15, five house made for $17, or three vegan M. Jardine chocolates for $14, which include a raw pistachio and an Italian salted lemon. A box plus one round of drinks is the fastest version of dessert here, useful when the last train matters.

Drinks that work as dessert

AYZA has been making Chocolate Martinis since 2007 and they are still the signature order. Classic, Espresso, Raspberry and White Chocolate are $19 each. The No. 19 is the richer house version at $26. If the table cannot agree, Six Mini Chocolate Martinis for Two is $57 and covers raspberry, espresso and white chocolate twice over.

On the wine side, the dessert and fortified section of the cocktails and wines menu lists a Washington chocolate wine at $13 a glass and Warre’s Warrior Ruby Port at $15. For a proper tasting, the NY Pairing Collection is $44 and matches three New York wines with three house made chocolates, while the Rosé Experience is $42 with Jacques Torres bonbons. For anyone not drinking, the Midnight Bloom mocktail is $14 and built on cold brew, cacao, fleur de sel and rose water, which puts it closer to dessert than to a soft drink.

Coming before the show instead

On a Sunday to Wednesday event, coming beforehand is usually the better plan. Arrive around 5:30 pm, have dessert and a drink, then walk over with time to spare. Happy hour runs Sunday to Friday from 4 to 6 pm with $7 glasses, $25 bottles, $10 Classic Chocolate Martinis and $6 beer, so an early stop costs noticeably less.

If dinner is part of the evening too, the dinner menu runs to boards for two, White Truffle Pizza, Braised Short Rib and Pici Cacio e Pepe. Give yourself about two hours before showtime for a full meal, or 75 to 90 minutes for shared plates, and tell the server your event start time when you sit down so the kitchen can pace it.
