A romantic restaurant Midtown NYC actually delivers on is harder to find than the volume of restaurants suggests. Midtown is built for lunch crowds, tourists and expense accounts, and most of what looks intimate in photographs turns out to be a loud room with dim lighting. The useful distinction is between a restaurant that looks romantic and one that lets you have a two hour conversation.

Here is what AYZA Wine & Chocolate Bar at 11 West 31st Street offers, and honestly who it does and does not suit.

Quick answer: AYZA is a wine and chocolate bar in Midtown with a dining room lit by 33 handmade glass lights and a heated garden behind it. Open from 4 pm daily. Boards for two are $35 and $39 and take 15 percent off a bottle, mains run $24 to $33, and dessert means fondue for two from $29 or a wine and chocolate pairing from $42. Three blocks from Herald Square.

Looking romantic and working as a romantic restaurant are different things.

What makes a restaurant romantic in practice

  • Acoustics. The most underrated quality in any restaurant. If you are repeating yourself, nothing else matters.
  • Light that flatters without hiding. Warm and low, but not so dark that you cannot see a face or read a menu.
  • Time. A table you are not being moved off, and service that will pace itself if you ask.
  • Something worth sharing. A plate in the middle gives a conversation somewhere to go.
  • A reason to stay past the last course. Dessert or a drink that takes half an hour rather than five minutes.

Candles are not on that list, and neither is the view. Both are pleasant and neither decides whether the evening works.

The two rooms

The indoor dining room sits beneath 33 handmade iridescent glass lights created by artist Sinem Disli, hung at varying heights so the ceiling reads as a night sky rather than a lighting scheme. It is a specific thing you can describe afterwards, which is a better test of a room than any adjective. The light is warm without being so low that photographs come out as dark blurs.

Behind it is a heated garden filled with flowers, quieter than the main room and usable well into the colder months. A heated outdoor table in Midtown in November is genuinely rare, and it is the space to ask for if the conversation matters more than the atmosphere. Request either in your reservation notes and treat it as a preference; if the seating is central to the evening, call (212) 714-2992.

What to order

Start with a board. The Fromage Board is $35 with Tête de Moine, French Brie, Parmigiano Reggiano and Shropshire Blue; the Maison Board is $39 and adds Prosciutto di Parma and bresaola. Either takes 15 percent off any bottle of wine, which is the best value on the menu and the reason to order it first rather than as an afterthought.

Then one main each rather than an elaborate order. The Braised Short Rib at $33 with port wine jus and the hand rolled Pici Cacio e Pepe at $24 are the two most couples end up swapping bites of. The Empire Steak Tartare at $21 is the more interesting starter if you want something beyond a board, and the Cauliflower with Wild Mushrooms at $25 is vegan and gluten free rather than a token gesture. Current dishes are on the dinner menu.

Tell the server you are not in a hurry and would like a gap between courses. It is the most effective request you can make in a restaurant and almost nobody makes it.

The dessert argument

This is the real case for AYZA over any other romantic restaurant in the neighbourhood. Chocolate is not an afterthought on the menu; it is half the name and it is made in house.

The Sweet Treats menu lists two fondues for two: the First Date Fondue at $31 with strawberries, banana, candied orange, French brie, Castelvetrano olives, Espelette pepper and Maldon salt, and the Rosé Fondue at $29 with Sicilian pistachios and organic rose buds. You pick the chocolate: Callebaut milk from Belgium, Callebaut white, or the 70 percent dark from República del Cacao in Ecuador for $4 more.

A fondue takes about half an hour and is designed to be eaten slowly, which is exactly the shape you want for the last part of a date. The alternative is a shared pairing flight: the Rosé Experience at $42 or the NY Pairing Collection at $44. If you would rather have your own plate, the coconut flan is gluten free at $14 and the olive oil gelato with hot honey and flaky salt is $11.

What to drink

The wine list runs $13 to $21 by the glass with bottle prices shown alongside, and has a New York section worth ordering from: Dr. Konstantin Frank Grüner Veltliner, Brotherhood Riesling, Keuka Cayuco Brut and dry rosé, and Bully Hill Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc goes with almost everything on the food menu and is something most visitors have never tried.

Chocolate Martinis are the signature and have been since 2007: Classic, Espresso, Raspberry and White Chocolate at $19, the No. 19 at $26, or Six Mini Chocolate Martinis for Two at $57. If neither of you wants to commit to a bottle, the $33 Wine Flight is three 3 ounce pours. For anyone not drinking, the Floral Spritz and Midnight Bloom mocktails are $14 and made to order.

Timing, and the cheapest good version

TimeRoomRoughly
4 to 6 pmQuietest, happy hour running$25 to $35 a person
6 to 7 pmFilling up, good energy$50 to $70 a person
7:30 to 8:30 pmBusiest and liveliest$60 to $80 a person
After 9 pmQuieter againDessert and drinks rather than dinner

The underrated option is early. Between 4 and 6 pm, Sunday to Friday, happy hour puts selected wines at $7 a glass or $25 a bottle, selected cocktails at $10 and beer at $6. A $25 bottle in the garden with a board is a genuinely good evening for well under half the price of a 7:30 pm booking. Saturday is the one day happy hour does not run.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It suits a first date, because there is something to look at and something to share. It suits an anniversary, because the evening can stretch. It suits a couple who want dessert to be the event rather than the epilogue. And it suits anyone staying near Herald Square, Penn Station or the Empire State Building who does not want to travel for dinner.

It is not the right choice if you want a tasting menu or a formal three course experience, since the kitchen is built around sharing. It is not a lunch option, because the doors do not open until 4 pm. And for a larger celebration, a regular table is the wrong booking: private events start at $69 per person and hold up to 20 seated or 40 standing.

Romantic restaurant Midtown NYC: FAQ

What makes a restaurant genuinely romantic?

Acoustics you can talk in, warm light you can still see by, a table you are not moved off, something worth sharing, and a dessert that gives you a reason to stay.

Does AYZA have outdoor seating?

Yes. A heated garden filled with flowers sits behind the dining room and stays usable well into the colder months. It is the quieter of the two spaces.

How much does dinner for two cost?

Roughly $50 to $70 a person at a normal evening booking with wine, or $25 to $35 during happy hour between 4 and 6 pm, Sunday to Friday.

What should we order for dessert?

A fondue for two at $31 or $29 with a choice of Belgian milk, white or 70 percent dark chocolate, or a shared wine and chocolate pairing flight at $42 or $44.

Is AYZA open for lunch?

No. Doors open at 4 pm every day, so this is an evening restaurant rather than a lunch or brunch option.

Do we need a reservation?

Walk ins are welcome when there is space, but Thursday to Saturday evenings and Madison Square Garden event nights fill up. Reserve through Resy and add a seating request.

Book the table

For a romantic restaurant Midtown NYC visitors and locals can both reach easily, book early in the evening, ask for the garden if the weather is good, and leave the last half hour for the fondue.
